A portfolio website for painter Cindy Hennes, with animated stripes, a filterable archive and large-format views of the paintings.
Overview
What this piece shows
Cindy Hennes is a Hamburg-based painter and visual artist whose work is built around “Striche”: repeated lines, acrylic and ink surfaces, and large-format series. I designed and developed a custom artist portfolio that turns that formal language into the site system: minimal framing, sharp typography, an artwork-first archive, and a homepage that behaves like a digital drawing surface.
The highlight: a live stroke system
The signature layer is a custom HTML5 Canvas animation written in vanilla JavaScript. It generates hand-like vertical stripe compositions on each visit, using randomized lane widths and gaps, procedural noise, soft bleed and fibre rendering, DPR-aware canvas sizing, requestAnimationFrame animation, quality adjustment, and visibility/offscreen throttling. The effect is not a generic visual gimmick; it translates Cindy’s line-based painting practice into a living browser layer.
Custom WordPress art archive
The site is built as a bespoke Roots Sage / Acorn WordPress theme with Blade templates, ACF-powered content blocks, and a Tailwind CSS v4 + Vite build. Cindy can manage series, individual works, sold and available states, prices, dimensions, exhibition dates, framing information, FAQ, and contact content directly in WordPress.
- Custom
serieandterminpost types for artwork series and dates - Muuri-powered works masonry with filters, lazy images, and AJAX batch loading for the artwork archive
- Custom lightbox with series galleries, artwork metadata, sold state, thumbnails, zoom, and drag behaviour
- Desktop and mobile WebM hero loops with lazy video handling
- Lenis smooth scroll, sticky section navigation, docking states, FAQ, contact, framing, and upcoming-dates sections
The result is a painter portfolio that stays practical in the backend while the frontend feels specific to Cindy’s work: quiet enough for the paintings, but with one unmistakable interactive signature.
